Practice management software: UK alternatives compared

Updated

What are the alternatives to LEAP and Clio for a UK law firm?

As of October 2026, UK options include Osprey Approach, Hoowla, Actionstep, Quill (now Dye & Durham) and Instrukt. Of those we could check, only Osprey (from £110 per licence a month plus VAT, minimum three) and Instrukt (£79 per fee earner a month, no VAT) publish a price; LEAP, Actionstep and Hoowla ask you to request one.

The options compared (as of October 2026)

Every fact is from the vendor's own website, read on 23 October 2026, and linked. Where a vendor doesn't publish something, we say so rather than estimate it. Instrukt is our product. Prices change, so check each vendor's page before you decide.

Who should pick what

  • You want to see a price before a sales call: Osprey Approach and Instrukt publish theirs. LEAP, Actionstep, Hoowla and Quill ask you to request one.
  • You run volume residential conveyancing and want to pay per completion: Hoowla and Instrukt both charge per completed case for conveyancing. Instrukt publishes its figure (£22); Hoowla doesn't.
  • You don't want a long contract: Instrukt (pricing) and Hoowla (pricing) publish rolling contracts. Osprey publishes a 36-month standard term with a 5% rise each year (price plans).
  • You want every search, registration and SDLT deadline worked out for you: Instrukt does that from the matter itself, with reminders and a record of each step. Searches, HM Land Registry applications and SDLT returns go through the services you already use.
  • You do commercial lease work: Instrukt is built around it, with lease terms on one page, break and renewal dates worked out, and AI lease review on the £129 plan.
  • You have more than 50 staff: Osprey publishes plans for firms of 50 or more employees.

Why there are no head-to-head pages

A fair “Instrukt vs” page needs prices and features compared like for like. LEAP and Actionstep don't publish prices, and we couldn't check Clio's UK pricing page, so a head-to-head on the three best-known names would rest on guesses. We'll add one when the facts are public.

How we compared

We read each vendor's own UK pricing and product pages on 23 October 2026, quoting their words where we could. We didn't use review sites or third-party price lists. VAT is shown as each vendor shows it: Instrukt adds none because JG Core Ltd isn't VAT-registered. If a fact here is wrong or out of date, email hello@instrukt.co.uk and we'll correct it.
